Soul Silo by jojo22 Soul Silo by jojo22
Experimenting with abstraction. When I see the word silo I think bureaucracy, then I see the four 'boxes' you can be slotted into. The ladder represents upward mobility, from box D to box A, also reflecting the grading system we are ranked by as children, which then sorts us into our futures.

Then there is the counterbalance. What does the counterbalance do? Is it part of the system or is it part of how we regulate ourselves against it?

Your answer may reflect your Locus of Control orientation.

boxed lives separated by whose at the top and bottom of the ladder. There will be no peace in this way of life

And yet, humans are very hierarchical creatures and though we strive towards ideals of equality, these traits keep re-emerging.

all pleasant-sounding abstractions meant to appeal to our emotions, but not our intellect

Pure intellect tends to be a cold place, so we use emotions to keep us warm.  Suspend reality (if there is such a thing as reality) to find comfort.

I seem to gravitate towards it as a colour preference - I should probably try and find a few other pleasing variations.

I have recently discovered grey - orange combination in one of the street graffitis and liked it.
But complementary colours are complementary colours and they are like diamonds: forever.

Actually, funny you should mention that - because I've recently found the grey and orange combination too - I was going to upload an image using it but ended up using the same image in a collage which needed more natural colour to be retained - but yes, very attractive combination.  I also like greens and blues together (aquatic colours) and blue and brown together.  Crazy for white and red too - apple crisp!

Yes, greens and blues - or greens, blues and browns (a bit of red added to blue gives some yummy browns).
White and red can add a great touch to all the rest (that's why some street signs can be very attractive).

I think I see a new set coming together.  There will be others I come across that add well to them in time I think.  I think abstract can encourage you to engage your intellect a little bit more in the artistic process, and I want to challenge myself to do that.

I'm not such a deep thinker (a bit dim really) but I really appreciate a strong graphic and the composition and colours on these is spot on.

Yes, I was delighted how this worked out - it was quite the dull image to begin with - just goes to show you never really know what you've got till you play with it a bit.

What do you think about this one?  I suspect it's a dud:

Its a bit tricky, did you have the flash on? - some of the highlights are a tad burned out but it is a great image.
I'd say leave it in but just see if you can pull it back a bit perhaps, may not be possible without ruining contrast.

Yeah - I burned them out on purpose.  The original one I uploaded was quite colourful.  Dunno, think I need to keep playing with the colour balance, but in the end it might be that the subject matter is not strong enough to make a good statement.
