Literature Text

I have a mask that I put on
A warriors mask to make me strong
To give me meaning, to hide my pain
To stop me crying in the rain

Apart and separate, look at me
An individual entity
There is no other like to see
My difference gives me will to be

A mask is of generic form
We recognise those it adorns
It is a badge, a uniform
Where is the self when lines are drawn?

In the search to find the self
Pull many masks down off the shelf
Try one on, what do you see?
A mask that trys to cover ME
An exploration of the masks we use to create our identity - implicit in this piece is that masks, while often worn to try and create an individual identity, cover up our individual identity, making us generic rather than expressing who we are in naked form - which is our true originality.
